Welcome Letter

Thank you for choosing to stay at The Lighthouse. We are very much looking forward to welcoming you and hope you enjoy your stay.

Please take the time to read and familiarize yourself with the important information below. We would like to ensure that your stay is not only fun and enjoyable, but also safe: safe for you and your loved ones and safe for the beautiful environment and home you’re spending time in.

Thank you for not smoking inside the house or granny flats!

Thank you for only walking barefoot or wearing soft-souled shoes, inside the house. High-heeled shoes cause a lot of damage

Thank you for caring for and respecting the fynbos dunes and wildlife. The house is situated in a nature conservancy full of animals and plants. Please walk only on the sandy paths and tread carefully: there are many tiny plants and succulents pushing their way to the surface of the sand.

The ostriches are used to humans, but remain wild. They can be quite aggressive, especially in the mating season or when raising their young. Look at them, take photos of them, but do not approach them.

We do not allow dogs, unless specifically arranged and confirmed with us prior to arrival. A cover change applies. Dogs can potentially harm the wildlife and cause damage to our property. We’ve found many tortoises with cracked shells caused by dog’s trying to bite them. Also, the ostriches stamp on and kick dogs that try to chase them.

Although rare, we do find ourselves in an area with snakes, spiders and scorpions. We haven’t had any in the house yet and most snakes will be in a hurry to get away from you, but for peace of mind, our local snake man, Johan, is available to remove any potentially unwanted visitors. See list of important local numbers.

A word of caution: Yzerfontein is comparatively safe, but not totally free of break-ins and opportunistic crime. Please make sure you close and lock all doors and windows (especially downstairs) before going to bed or leaving the house, and don’t leave any valuables visibly lying around, especially during the night. We are not responsible for any loss, injuries, or damage caused by any means. – There is an alarm system for main house ground floor – please ask Priscilla how to activate it.

Please enjoy the swimming pool! But enjoy it wisely: don’t jump in it or run around it. Splashing wastes precious water. Please watch your children!!

The towels in the sauna room can be used for around the pool or at the beach.

Please make use of the outside braai (barbeque) for cooking and use the fireplaces for snuggling up and getting warm. Please don’t cook on the fireplaces. And remember: this is a FIRE HAZARD AREA!

We provide 1 basket of firewood per day. If you need more wood, we charge R50 per extra basket. Please pay in cash directly to Priscilla!

We appreciate you being cautious with food and drinks in the house. It is the pale interior, which gives the home its dreamy magic, but it’s also quite a challenge to keep stain free.

There is free and uncapped WIFI available. For load shedding, we have a backup power supply for the router, TV and fridge.

The Lighthouse is equipped to cater for, and host 10 guests. An additional 2 people are welcome, with prior arrangement with us. You’ll find, that the kitchen has cutlery and crockery for a maximum of 12 people. Thank you for understanding, that no groups larger than 12 people are allowed at a time at the Lighthouse.

Please have fun, but remember that we have neighbours close by and we value a friendly co-operation with them. Whatever you do, please consider them. Loud parties and noisy guests cause problems for everybody and will not be tolerated. We have the right to evict anyone, without notice, who is found to disrespect our property and rules.

The Sauna is a wonderful place to relax and detox the body and is available for 2 hours per day, between 8am and 8pm. Please arrange a time with Priscilla, who is the only person allowed to operate the sauna at any time. She will turn it on and off for you.

An additional fee of R200 will be charged for any additional hour after that.

HOW TO SAUNA CORECTLY

– Wash your body and dry it completely before entering the sauna

– Use a clean towel to sit/lie on in the sauna, to absorb sweat

– When you feel you’ve had enough, have a cold shower or dip into the outside plunge pool

– Dry yourself properly after the cold dip/shower

– REST for at least 20 m

– Repeat if you like

Please also remember to use water sparingly!

We may, within reason,  accommodate some guest laundry washing for a booking of more than 2 nights. Only Priscilla may operate our washing equipment. Please co-ordinate with her if any private laundry needs washing.

We understand that breakages occur, no matter how careful you are and we are happy to absorb the odd broken glass, plate or cup, but we reserve the right to invoice you for damages we feel exceed the norm. AirBnB offers a cover; in case of claims however they might charge the guest directly).

For any immediate queries, please ask Priscilla, who is our house manager, to assist you, or please use the guest group on WhatsApp.
